A Historical Mystery Filled With Romance and Friendship
So whenever it comes to Chinese dramas, I'm a suckered for historical, fantasy, wuxia dramas. The cinematography, the backdrops, the history, legends, costumes and plots are always amazing for these type of dramas. To be honest, the are better than modern Chinese dramas. I have seen more historical, wuxia fantasy Chinese dramas than I can count. My favorite one till this day is Legend of Yunxi ( Go watch its amazing!!)
Anyways back to the current drama I was reviewing. Maiden Holmes is a historical, romance, mystery drama filled with friendship, royal conspiracy and some action and humor. Although this was a low budget drama featuring new actors, I have to say, it did pretty well. I like how the female characters were level headed, and independent in her own way. The male leads were also very open minded progressive in terms of their personality and relationships with the female leads.
The friendship the 5 leads had formed over the drama was so heart warming. Usually in drama, the group would break up towards the end of the drama or in the middle. However in this drama, that never happened. Instead they worked through all the obstacles and cases together. The character developmemt and plot development was also well written out even though it was simple. The romance was sweet, not too mushy and over the top. Plus I liked the chemistry and dynamic between the two couples.
Synopsis of Maiden Holmes:
It is the sixth century CE and the Qi Kingdom, in what is now Eastern China, is a land at war. The young teenage prince Pei Yan Zhi (Zhang Ling He) a prodigal young military talent, is sent to ward off a force of invaders. Although he makes a valiant effort, his army is ultimately ambushed and defeated in a decisive battle. An opportunist foe at the imperial court takes advantage of the situation, forcing Pei Yan Zhi to step down as head of the army – and manages to get a young subservient candidate to take the throne. Pei Yan Zhi feels he was betrayed. He vows to get to the bottom of the intrigue and goes undercover to investigate, pretending to be a commoner along with his servant and friend Fei Yuan (Huang Yi) to help him work undetected. On his quest for the truth, he meets a remarkably smart and resourceful young female detective named Su Ci (Sebrina Chen). Together, they form a close bond. They team up with a martial arts young master, Xie Beming (Zhang Jia Ding) and a village tomboy girl, expert in potions and medicine Dong Rushing (Wang Yi Zhe). They make a joint bid to discover the scale of the scheming that has undermined the Imperial Palace.
My rating: 4/5
** I gave this a 4/5 because I wish the cases were a bit more intense and mystery heavy.
